Flipping her auburn hair over her shoulder as if to say look at me, Red gushed, “Without me the world really wouldn’t be a colorful place. Why, look at everything I’m privileged to grace with my brilliant shine.”
“How can you say that? I add a lot of color to this world! Without me you wouldn’t have the color of the sun.” Yellow replied as he put his hands on his hips, frowning.
“Now wait just a minute,” Green said. “I am the best color around. Without me there wouldn’t be much color to the world. I am seen everywhere. And how many people complain when their lawns turn brown and then water me so that their lawns will return to my nice, vibrant color again? Hmmm?” She raised his chin in a haughty manner.
“Well sure, but none of you has a fruit named after you,” Orange declared, batting her eyes in an effort to appear demure.
“Ha!” Blue exclaimed critically. I happen to cover the whole expanse of the world… I am it’s covering.” He crossed his legs and folded his arms over his chest, as if daring anyone to challenge him.
“Wait just a minute.” Indigo said, barely containing his fury. “I happen to sometimes join you in covering the sky and I can also be seen in the deep waters of the sea.”
The colors started talking over each other, everyone proclaiming why they were the best color in the entire world. Soon, they were all standing up, getting in each others faces; really going at it.
Violet sat quietly, gazing at them and wondering if she should say anything. When Yellow started pulling Red’s hair and the rest joined her, she knew it was time to say something. She stood up and strode to the edge of the fray.
“Excuse me!”
Everyone stopped immediately. Violet was usually prim and proper so they were surprised to hear her raise her voice.
“Well,” Violet said, laughter ringing in her voice, “that’s one way to get your attention should I ever need it again.” She gathered her skirts about her and sat down. One thing about Violet was that she always seemed so elegant in a Victorian sort of way.
The rest of the colors looked at her expectantly, some with animosity on their faces.
“Now,” said Violet. “I have something to say.”
Who does she think she is that she can speak to us? Red thought, as she rolled her eyes.
“No need to roll your eyes at me, Red.”
Red had the decency to blush, which was a bit hard for her since she was already red.
Violet continued. “Don’t you think we all have something to contribute to the world seeing that we’re all a part of the rainbow? It is such a colorful world and it would be rather dull without any of us, don’t you think? I mean, each one of us has varying shades beneath us and we all make up such beauty across the whole earth.”
They all stopped and just looked at her, some of them a bit slack-jawed as they pondered her words.
“Wow,” Red finally said. “I guess you’re right. I’m sorry for being so arrogant and thinking I could color the world by myself. I guess that would be pretty dull with just red as the only color. We really do need each other, don’t we?”
“Yeah,” Yellow interjected. “We really do. All the colors of the world are important, not just we in the rainbow and our varying shades, but all colors.”
“True,” said Green, “because all of us in some way or another do complement another color.”
“Thanks Violet,” said Orange, “for opening our eyes today.”
“Yeah, thanks Violet…” they all said together.
“Let’s not forget what a rainbow is,” Blue said quietly.
“Oh yeah, God’s promise to the world…” Indigo said.
“Yes…” they all said together as they raised their hands in worship and adoration to God, the one who had made them all.
