Fragrant white lilies? exotic orchids? deep purple irises?—what’s your favourite flower? My favourite…well, I’ll leave you wondering, while I tell you how a very small act of honesty resulted in a beautiful blessing, covered in the fragrance of Christ.
I had already unloaded all my shopping bags, and two small children, when I discovered it: one bag too many. It contained expensive, frozen food. Knowing how I would feel if such a purchase went missing, I somewhat irritably decided to phone the store. I checked the till-slip for a phone number—nothing. The local directory had to be unearthed before I could check if someone had noticed their missing purchase.
And indeed, the helpful lady I spoke to was in fact standing right next to a gentleman who was missing some groceries. Now: how to re-unite shopping bag and owner? Via the patient shop assistant, I asked if he could fetch the parcel – but it turned out he was a tourist, with no idea of where I lived. I groaned, not quite out loud! I would have to haul myself and two irritable children back into the car and back to the store…
Just then my friend (extra granny to the children) arrived and immediately offered to return the bag. After offering a few half-hearted protests—“No, it’s too much to ask!” and “It’s too hot to go out again!”—I thankfully accepted her offer. As I dealt with tired children, baths, and supper, I dreamed about whether she might at that minute be meeting a new friend. Wouldn’t it be lovely if she found her “someone special”? When my friend returned, it was not with stars in her eyes (the man’s wife had been with him!). She was, however, carrying a huge bunch of flowers, presented by the gentleman. My dear friend, who had really done all the work, insisted that I keep the flowers.
Have you guessed yet what my favourites are? I’ll tell you: bright, sunny, cheerful, yellow roses. And have you guessed what was in the thank-you bunch? That’s right—yellow roses a-plenty! In a time of stress and personal depression, these happy blooms were a bright sign of God's love and grace. All it had taken from me was a phone-call – a friend and a kind stranger did the rest, releasing the sweet perfume of Jesus.
