"Good Morning, students," Sister Margaret beemed, "This should be a fun day today, and I hope we all learn something interesting , new, and educational in todays presentations. Who wants to be first?"
Sister Margaret looked around the room "No hands? No volunteers? Well, now," she smiled mischievously, "this gives me the pleasure to pick and choose a volunteer, right? How about our newest classmate kicking it off for us today, JoAnna?"
Hearing her name called, JoAnna reluctantly got up from her desk and slowly wended her way to the front of the classroom. With her knees knocking and her mouth dry as cotton she turned to face her audience - thirty giggling, snickering 7th-graders and one lone Nun, who had now moved from her desk to a chair in the front row.
"My name is JoAnna and I'm a person, whereas what I hold here in my hand is a color named 'Purple' "....and she held up what appeared to be a piece of purple cloth.
"Purple is an intriguing and mysterious color created by combining hot red and cool blue together; and is known worldwide as a symbol of Royalty and Nobility; and was worn exclusively by Kings, Emperors and Rulers in ancient Biblical times.
"A color, just like a person, has relatives and family members that are half-breeds, off-shoots and of different shades, and in the case of my friend Purple, here - he has cousins, nieces and nephews named Violet, Lavender, Grape, Orchid and Lilac, just to name a few..
"Purple is also mentioned in many songs," and never fails to bring a touch of winsome charm and romantic poetry to the lyrics; such as: "When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls" in the song 'Deep Purple', which was my grandmother's favorite, or " From purple mountains majesty, above the fruited plains." which comes from 'America the Beautiful'."
The snickering had long ago ceased, and the audience now seemed captivated.
"Colors, like people, have both Good and Bad traits. In the case of Purple, it has what is called 'Purple speech', which is profanity and raunchy language that belongs one step below the curb...you know, gutter talk. And 'Purple prose' is another "not-so-nice trait, which is a form of exaggeration - or to state it bluntly, 'colorful lies'
"Of course, nobody is perfect. Neither I, the person, or my friend Purple, the color, is perfect - only Jesus was perfect, and He was crucified on the Cross. And when I think about it.....it was a person such as I. that put Him on that Cross; and a person such as I, that put a purple robe on Him and then wove a crown of thorns and placed it on His head. It was a person such as I, that struck Him on the head with a stick to make the thorns cut into His brow, and a person such as I, that mocked and spat upon Him as blood trickled down from the cuts on His brow to stain This"....and JoAnna held up the little piece of purple cloth in her hand..."staining the beautiful color purple forever."
As JoAnna walked slowly back to her desk, the room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop; but the minute JoAnna sat down at her desk, the whole room jumped to their feet with a rousing burst of applause, including Sister Margaret, who was having difficulty applauding with just one hand, as her other hand was busily wiping away her tears.
