It's 2 o'clock in the morning and I'm still wide awake. My eyes won't close and my mind won't shut down. I lie in bed tossing and turning, pondering and thinking , about Man's fate....death. There are so many questions, yet so few answers.
I look up and say aloud..... "Hello, Ceiling, what's with your not allowing Mr. Sandman through your portals tonight? Whatever happened to that old Biblical scripture written by the wise man of old which states: 'There's a season for everything, 'A time for sleeping and a time for sawing logs'? I'll take either one if you'll just let him in. Please, I need my Z's!"
A foolish question always gets the silent treatment, right?.... but that didn't stop me from my discourse with the ceiling.
"Just think, Mr. Ceiling, if it hadn't been for Eve, the First Lady of Earth, and a malcontent reject from Heaven posing as a serpent in an innocent, but forbidden tree, - we'd all be living happily ever after down here on Earth. But No! The lady had to take a stroll, loiter near the one and only forbidden tree in the garden, and then stick around long enough to get hoodwinked by a fast talking fruit salesman, and guess what? She goes for his sales pitch and now Every living thing on planet Earth has the Breath of Life knocked out of them....and forever after live under the doom of death.
"But what puzzles me the most, Mr. Ceiling, is... why must the innocent die along with the guilty? Take for instance the innocent offspring of an aspen, oak, elm, dogwood, maple, or hickory tree, Why must their leaves fall to their death every Autumn? What did they ever do to deserve to die? But every autumn, one by one, the leaves will fall from their mother's arms, and flutter down, down, down...only to die at her feet.
"The saddest part of all, is watching the leaves struggle to stay afloat as long as possible, so desperately wantng to live that they'll hitch a ride with the wind just to prolong their destiny for a few extra seconds; but alas...they will succumb and bite the dust."
Turning my back on the ceiling, I jockey around for a more comfortable position, but eyes still won't close and my mind keeps on buzzing. Man was given dominion over every living thing on Earth, but he has no advantage when it comes to the decree of death; for All living things that rely on (oxygen) The Breath of Life to sustain them, will all end up in the same place; from dust they came, and to dust they return.
Another thing puzzles me about the lovely autumn leaves Just a few days or weeks before they make their final curtain call, they put on an Autumn Fashion Show that's out of this world. I guess you might call it a "Going-Away Party." For who, I don't know. Perhaps it's for themselves. But they splash the mountains, hills and valleys with a spectacular mixture of blazing reds and scarlets, golden yellows, reddish-orange, burnished bronze and purplish hues of russet and gold, which makes Autumn one of the top seasons for Scenic Beauty.
One might say the leaves are "Dressed to kill", but in reality...they are dressed to die. But unlike the autumn leaf that falls, never to rise again, I WILL rise again one day, and go to my Fathers house and reclaim that precious Breath of Life that awaits me up there from whence it came... and This time it will be for Eternity....where the word "death" is never uttered..
With that in mind, I shut my eyes and slept in perfect peace..
