And so it was in the blustery month of March when Janice began making plans to travel to Germany. March was her vacation time; so early in the month she prepared for the trip. She made travel arrangements and with her grandparents help, was able to reserve a lovely hotel in Kassel, Germany. It was close to a large and beautiful park, where a statue of Hercules stood proud at the end of a very long and steep trek inside the park.
She had seen pictures of the park with the many photos her grandparents displayed at family holiday events. The park was filled with museums, several gift shops and several wonderful eating places.
But before going, she had to obtain a visa, withdraw enough travel and spending money, add a few new outfits for the trip and get a few immunization shots. The doctor trip was the least desired but was required for any overseas trip.
The day of the flight found her nervous, anxious but happy to leave. This was her first overseas flight and no doubt, would be memorable.
After a good twelve hours, she landed in Germany, tired but eager to begin her travels. She was able to find a taxi quickly and soon she arrived at the quaint and lovely hotel. She was told not to sleep during the day but to wait until evening. This was hard to do, for the trip was long and jet lag was pulling her ever so close to the inviting and warm bed.
After a good night’s sleep she had a delicious German breakfast and then returned to her room to review her travel plans.
She planned to visit the large park in Kassel first, have lunch at the top, where the statue of Hercules stood brave and strong and then, a trip to the quaint gift shop, adjacent to the restaurant.
It was at the restaurant where she saw an extremely handsome man. He was having lunch—a chef salad and sandwich made of sausage and cheese. He ate ravenously and didn’t seem to notice anyone there.
She tried to get his attention but he was just too busy enjoying the food. Then, all of a sudden, he looked up and saw her looking at him. He smiled a devilish but very attractive smile and motioned her to come sit with him.
Janice smiled back and minutes later joined him at the small but lovely covered table.
“Good morning, lovely lady! You must be American because your smile is so open and accepting. A man doesn’t see that too often here. You are American, aren’t you? Don’t disappoint me.”
“Yes, I’m American but after just being her less than a day, I feel like I would like to become a German citizen.”
“Well, that may happen, young lady. You look to me like you would fit in well. My name is Jeff Bruckner. I’ve lived here in Kassel all my life. Nice meeting you, young lady…”
After introducing herself to Jeff, they began a talk that lasted over two hours and at the end, made plans to do some sight-seeing together. Janice found out to her great relief and joy that they had much in common and after looking at some photos and other memorabilia that he shared with her, she felt at ease with him.
The next day they visited several museums and at lunch they stopped again for a snack. Janice had to leave for awhile to use the restroom and upon returning saw Jeff talking with another, very attractive woman. She was sitting at the table next to them and before she returned to the table she saw the woman hand Jeff a stuffed envelope. From the outline of the envelope, it looked like it was filled with cash—and a lot of it.
As she approached the table, the woman and Jeff saw her returning. Both got up and quickly left. She never saw either of them again but three times during the time she had left in Germany, a strange phone message awaited her in her hotel room. “Be careful who you befriend my dear; appearances are deceiving.”
