“What’s that?” whispered Kylie. Her red hair was pulled up in pigtails. Her green eyes stared at Emma.
“I don’t know!” Emma whispered back. Blond hair curled around her tiny round face and brown eyes.
The best friends sat up in the small tent. They held their sleeping bags tight around them. Someone – or something – was out there!
Today was Kylie’s birthday. There had been pizza and cake and ice cream. There had been hide-and-seek and pin-the-tail-on-the donkey. There had even been a piñata full of candy! All the other girls were gone home. And Kylie and Emma were camping in Kylie’s back yard.
“Snap!”
“There it is again!” whispered Emma. “I want to go home!”
Kylie scooted to the front of the tent. “I’m going to peek and see what’s out there.” She reached for the door flap. She yanked it open.
“Snap!”
Kylie started laughing. Emma crawled next to Kylie. She started laughing, too.
Kylie’s dog Tucker sat outside the tent. One end of his leash was in his mouth. The other end was stuck in a rosebush. He was trying to get it loose. Every time he pulled it, the leash hit the patio floor.
“Oh, you silly dog!”
“Snap!”
