He bent his knee, bowed his head, and extended his hand toward heaven. Reaching up to God, he said, “Here I am Father, I surrender myself to you.”
Minutes later, he dried his tears and sat down. Not another soul was in the chapel and its furnishings were scarce as well. Offered as the alter was a single table with a crucifix hanging above it.
Minutes before he arrived there, he was driving his pick-up. It had rained, the temperature dropped, and ice formed creating a mirror finish on the road. She slid into the intersection and then he slid into her. Broad-sided, his truck pushed her little car. He got out and ran to her, dialing 911 as he went. She was unconscious, bleeding, and pregnant.
“Oh God, what have I done?” he screamed and he heard a voice ask “What is your emergency?”
“There is an accident,” he replied and he listened carefully to the voice he carried next to his ear. He touched her face and tried to wake her, but nothing. He heard the sirens in the distance and then the phone went dead.
Minutes ticked away. He left everything in the road and went with her. He watched her life-less body, waiting for a sign, but nothing. As the others tried to save her, he slipped away into prayer.
“God, please let them live. If you save them, I will give myself fully and totally to you.”
In through the emergency room she was taken. Minutes passed while he stood in the midst of all the commotion. People passed him, some on his left and others on his right. They went in to her and then came out again. The curtain moved, people shouted, and then at the height of the commotion, they fell silent.
Eternity passed and then he heard a baby cry. Then a voice he thought he knew said, “God, thank you for my baby.”
Minutes later he followed the signs and it led him to this place. So, in this little chapel, he bent his knee, bowed his head, and extended his hand toward heaven.
