I read of a Sunday School teacher who asked his fourth grade class a question to introduce the lesson one Sunday. He asked, “What is brown and furry, has a bushy tail and loves to eat nuts?”
One of his students leaned over and whispered in the ear of his friend, “It sounds like a squirrel, but I bet the answer’s Jesus.”
This little story reminded me of my friend, Phil, who was also my favorite Sunday School teacher. Phil was so full of Jesus he hardly ever talked about anything else and if you had to guess what Phil was talking about, “Jesus” was a safe guess.
Phil is the only Sunday School teacher I remember from my youth, though I know there were others. Phil impacted my life. In retrospect, I feel he was the best friend I’ve ever had. I never told him so, perhaps because I didn’t realize it in my youth. He’s with the Lord now, and if my concept of the afterlife is anywhere near accurate, he now knows how much he meant to me.
You see, Phil was my father in the faith. He was my Paul and I was his Timothy. Oh, I wasn’t the only one. Phil had a passionate love for all children. He and his wife spent most of their mature years working with troubled children. I doubt one could count the number he brought to the Lord. He was too humble to ever keep count himself.
Phil was neither wealthy nor a gifted man in the ordinary sense. His chief asset was his selfless love. He visited in the homes of his students. He took his students to youth rallies, parties, and summer camp. Most of all, Phil taught by his example. He lived for Jesus.
I recall the first summer I attended church camp. I was thirteen and there was no way my parents could afford the fee. Phil declared, “We have a fund to pay for kids whose parents can’t afford to send them to camp.” Much later, I learned the “fund” resided in Phil’s hip pocket. During that week of camp I came to know Jesus as my Savior.
If your Sunday School is blessed with teachers like Phil, you should thank God for such a blessing. If you are blessed by God to be a teacher, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom,” Col 3:16 New International Version.
