Away their night, trading joy for mournful sigh
As dreams they loose and nightmares keep
Shuddering and muttering through endless night
O great Jerusalem, shouting hosanna to the King
Outwardly rejoicing, inwardly scheming
To take His crown and when He’s shorn
To replace it with bruising, piercing thorn
And yet His lament is not the cross
On which He soon will die,
But He instead bemoans the loss
Of open blessing under open sky
His city does not know Him
His voice won’t carry above its din
With mournful cries He seals her fate
Looming over her, now too late
Heaven weeps as sinners sleep
First sweating blood then flesh is flayed
Holy love impales as sinful nails are driven deep
All armies of darkness are against Him arrayed
Chaos of voices in murky, swirling mists
Cacophony of miseries, outstretched hands to clenching fists,
Clutching emptiness to cadaverous chests
Crawling and clinging to the foot of the cross
Cannot see the top where victory rests
Condemned to grope in blindness lost
And we who gaze upon that scene
Awaken as from some dreadful dream
To finally see what we’ve always known
It is the lamb alone who owns the throne
And we weep as we rise from sleep
Seeing the nails we drove so deep
And shout to Him with praiseful voices
As Heavens weeps no more, but now rejoices.
