you think you are much better.”
Said Spider to Grasshopper,
“And digested every letter.
You use words such as 'tremendous'
'excruciating' or 'adieu',
so many words are used
when you only need a few.
Sounds like you've been to Harvard
or maybe it was Yale,
you're just so highly edumacated
'tis painful to hear your tales.
Let me give you a sample
of talking simply plain,
'sad' instead of 'woebegone'
'boring' for 'mundane.'
'Jubilant' could be 'happy'
how about 'full' for 'replete,'
I guess I've said enough
I'll sit upon my seat.”
The spider sat upon her web
while looking very glum,
she hoped she hadn't hurt her friend
but was tired of feeling dumb.
Grasshopper took a moment
to gather up his thoughts,
then he remembered the lessons
while young that he was taught.
“My companion and dear friend
I use many words to portray,
why use such commonalities
like 'cold' in place of 'frappe.'
It's 'appropriate' and 'authentic'
for 'right' and 'real' you see,
why try to be anything
except transparent me?
My mother was a teacher
one much loved and sought,
language was a love of hers
a love of which I caught.
It was a game of sorts
often we'd converse,
she'd ask me lots of questions
and I'd reply in verse.
For if I stumped her royally
I'd win the game that day,
the weekly prize was ice cream
a treat for which she'd pay.
It has become a habit
not a means to quell,
it's just a part of who I am
so please my friend, don't dwell.
You are clever, very clever
in ways you don't surmise,
however could one spin a web
without being wise?
You spin from place to place
with hardly anything I see,
a blueprint is not needed
as you move from leaf to tree.
I'm glad that we are friends
I am certain to convey,
you build our place to reside
and our adventures I'll parley.
Enjoying time together
living amidst the shade,
the things we see while hidden here
that happens every day.
Yes, I'll use vocabulary
and speak it with much grace,
for it pleases my dear mother
and puts a smile upon her face.”

I had some trouble in places with the meter, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a bit of tweaking.
I loved your characters and the "tribute" to mom at the end. Great job.
