For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
How To Recognize A Sinner
They slam the morning alarm
In a flail of worn sheets
Laugh and laugh like puberty
At a radio jocks insults
Let decorum boil down
Like water to metal
Leaving only rumors to pour
Over a tablespoon of "instant".
They send their child off
With rented clarinet
Feed the mutt called habit
Empty a souvenir mug
Read the advice column
Their horoscope, the funnies
And nothing else, time left-over
To imagine an illicit rendezvous.
They plan this summer to paint
The outside white again, until
Lost in a "dream of Jeannie" rerun
They swallow two gel-caps
To numb their temples.
Because they are bores, killjoys
Like you and me
Waiting for something big.
