You may think it more a romantic notion than reality that I would fall in love at the high school prom. Nevertheless, I fell in love.
Elizabeth was my dream date. From the moment I knew she would accompany me to the prom, I was thrilled. She is so beautiful and smart and witty. She is so pleasant. That I would have the pleasure of her company for the prom, for any evening, seemed almost impossible. Elizabeth is a radiant jewel. I am a common stone.
When I arrived to escort her to the prom I was stunned. She was exquisite. Her mahogany hair was arranged to perfection and her deep, enchanting eyes danced and shone and captured my imagination. She wore a rich blue gown that perfectly adorned her in all of its flowing formality and finery. What an amazing image she cast! I felt far too plain to be in her company. Nonetheless, we would spend the evening together.
As we shared the evening’s meal, I was impressed by her poise. She understood all of the formality that such an evening required and accomplished it completely and effortlessly. She was charming and entertaining as we engaged in our dinnertime conversation. Enjoyable minutes melted away into a most pleasant moment in time. I am shy, yet with her, I felt comfortable and safe.
As the dance began, I was captivated by her grace. My steps were hesitant, sometimes clumsy. Her Swing, her Foxtrot, her Waltz were all done with the ease of simply striding across the floor. It was obvious that she was a better student of the dances we had learned. She was gracious as she showed me steps and patterns and helped me better my dance. She seemed to mind very little that I would rise far less to the skill of Fred Astaire than she of Ginger Rogers. We danced the evening away and it was a wonderful time.
But, there was another elegant lady who also caught my eye. She was stunning as well. Throughout the evening I found myself casting numerous glances to her. Her auburn curls and fair skin, nicely set in a princess pink gown, commanded not only my attention but the attention of many. She was not my date but I had a fondness for her.
As the evening began its gradual close, I longed for a dance with her. I was not sure what she would think. We had not come together. We were not a couple. But, I wanted that dance. I asked. She said yes.
For the next few moments we waltzed. She was graceful and funny and pretty. She was captivating. As we danced and talked I was sure that there was much in common we shared. As the dance ended, I desired the next but I knew that her dance card held another’s name. So I simply said, “Thank you”. She smiled and looked at me and said, “Thanks for the dance, Daddy.”
She returned to her friends and I returned to my lovely date, my wife, standing there among the other chaperones. As I exited the floor, I walked past numerous chatting couples and I walked through twenty-two years of amazing memories; falling in love, a first dance, getting married, raising two great children; one who tonight was lovely in a princess pink gown. “I am so very blessed. Thank you, Lord, for your blessings”. The prayer spilled over with a sincere depth of gratitude. For it was true. I am blessed.
I returned to the exquisite lady in the beautiful blue gown. “May I have this dance”, I asked. And we danced the evening’s final dance. She was lovely and as I held her and looked into her eyes, I fell in love with her again, for the ten thousandth time.
I fell in love tonight. At my daughter’s prom I fell in love with the most remarkable woman at the ball. And tomorrow night at a dusty ball field where little boys play, I’ll look at the lady beside me and fall in love again. She’ll be wearing jeans and a baseball jersey and she’ll be yelling cheers for our son. And she will be exquisite and I will fall in love with her for the ten thousandth time plus one.
