This girl, who was small,
Had wanted a bike
Or nothing at all.
Her dad said, “My Dear,
We love you so much,
But times are hard now;
We can’t afford such.”
Then the child pouted
And pleaded and cried,
But her fondest wish
Must still be denied.
When she opened gifts
On that Christmas day,
The new doll she got
Filled her with dismay.
But late in the day
A big truck came by
While on the porch, Dad
Relieved, heaved a sigh.
Through true sacrifice,
He’d managed to get
His daughter a gift
She’d never forget.
She did not deserve
This special treasure
From her father’s love,
Too great to measure.
Remembering love,
This little girl grown,
Gives Christmas gifts now
With love of her own.
My pastor-dad, John H. Cole, was love personified. He had a gift for kindness and for making people feel special. He managed to convince his four children that each of us was his favorite. His caring extended beyond his family to his congregation, as well as to everyone he met.
Several weeks before he died, Dad asked, “Have you said ‘My Father’ today? I say it every morning, and I’m filled with such joy at His presence.” My Dad taught me of my Heavenly Father’s love by the example of his love.
