There are many reasons we take walks. We walk for exercise, the enjoyment of being outdoors and sometimes just to get out of the house. I often count my steps as I walk. There are 13 stairs in my house. I always take 4 steps on the entry rug. I am conscious to not step on any cracks (my mother’s back has never been broken though).
Have you ever been in deep thought while walking? I am constantly thinking while walking. It depends on where I’m at as to what I’m thinking. If I’m at work, chances are I’m thinking of what I am going to ask the person I am going to see. At home, I think about the beverage or snack I am getting. My thoughts are on the drive and destination while I walk to my car.
There are times though, that I think of my relationship with Jesus. Am I walking for Him? Not metaphorically, but spiritually. Is that light I’m walking towards the living room lamp or the light of the world Jesus Christ? Are my conscious thoughts directed towards my life or turning it over Him?
Sometimes I walk so fast that I miss things that need attention. Should I pick up my mess? Did I take time to smell the roses? Does that person with a flat tire need help? I am naturally a fast walker and overlook many important details. Slowing down would help, but how do I do that?
Someone once told me to try and say the serenity prayer and recite each word with each step. My first step is God. My second step is grant. My third step is me and so on until I finish the prayer. I do this every now and then and it always puts me in a contact with God. This is what He wants; communication with Him. He wants me to talk to Him and think about Him.
My walk with God is growing and growing as it should be. My physical walk may not have slowed down, but my spiritual walk is slow enough that I can recognize where God is and what He is doing. This is the most important walk I will ever have; a relationship with my Lord Jesus Christ.
No matter what has happened or will happen, I need to have a steady and secure enough walk with God to know that He is there for me and will not let anything happen to me. I am so grateful that He wants to be a part of my life. My goal today is to walk towards the light of Jesus Christ.
