Lamentations 3:22-23, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness.” (KJV) In 1923 Thomas Chisholm used this scripture from Lamentations to write a poem about the greatness of God’s faithfulness to us. The poem was then set to music by William Runyan and became a treasured hymn for many churches. The chorus reads, “Great is thy faithfulness, Great
is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new
mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand
hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord
unto me.” *
The hymn thus speaks to His great mercy, and His providing for all our needs. The Bible lists numerous verses besides Lamentations that attest to His great faithfulness. Two examples are: His faithfulness in forgiving our sins: !st John 1:9. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (KJV). And in making a way to escape from temptation: !st Corinthians 10:13: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: But God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what you are able, but will, with the temptation, also make a way to escape that you may be able to bear it.” (KJV)
But how great is our faithfulness to Him? Do we take for granted His faithfulness to us, expecting that He will be there when we need Him, but not bothering about Him otherwise? We need to look deep into our hearts and make sure that, as far as we are able, we deserve and appreciate His unending mercies to us. Praise Him for His continued faithfulness!
