“What does the result say?” enquired Sarah anxiously. Eben was just entering their home. “Sorry dear” he replied, “The result is negative. We have not succeeded still.”
“It’s been more than three years since we’re trying”, sobbed Sarah, “why aren’t we succeeding Eben?”
Eben and Sarah were computer professionals. Being upwardly mobile they had postponed their first child for a couple of years. But now this.
Smiling, Eben said, “We are not computers to function at the flick of a button Sarah. We are humans and we need the grace of God.”
“But we have been praying also so faithfully Eben. Not only we both, but also all our prayer group has been praying. And it’s been three full years now!” said Sarah as she struggled to stop her tears.
“We must keep on praying and trying Sarah. The Lord knows what is best for us and when. Let us not give up hope.” Counseled Eben.
“What I find most difficult to handle is the taunting from others.” Sarah said softly “They keep on at me. Thank God you are so understanding. But for you and for God, I wouldn’t have been able to bear all this!”
Eben came close and hugged Sarah. “Let us keep on trusting Him.” He said. “He will surely help us.”
Few days later Sarah answered her door bell. “Oh welcome Beulah, do come in” she said as Beulah walked in. “Sorry for the delay in visiting you Sarah” replied Beulah as she sat down, “Rajan and I have been planning to visit you for many weeks. We couldn’t make it. So I decided to make time to come and see you alone. Rajan is so busy you know. Well, how are Eben and you faring?” she enquired.
“We are okay Beulah” began Sarah, “ but….” She trailed off. “But what Sarah? Do continue.” Encouraged Beulah.
“We… we are not able to bear children Beulah. It’s been three years since we are trying” said Sarah mournfully.
“The situation is the same with us too Sarah. Only thing is we are older than you. It’s ten years since we are praying for a child.”
Suddenly Beulah’s mobile phone chirruped. “Hello” she said as she picked it up from her hand bag.” What? Did you say Rajan is in hospital? What for? When?”
“It seems Rajan met with an accident and is in hospital” said Beulah, “I must rush there.” “I’ll come with you Beulah, let’s go fast.” Replied Sarah as they set out.
“I am very sorry” the doctor said, “He was brought in with a severe head injury. We have done all we could. We have to wait for 24 hours and keep him under observation. The chances are fifty-fifty.”
Beulah broke down. Sarah hugged her and said, “We will pray Beulah. God will surely heal Rajan. He is a prayer-answering God. All of us at the prayer group will get together and pray now.”
Their prayers continued. Rajan was battling for his life. Early the next morning he had passed peacefully away. Gently Sarah conveyed the news to Beulah. Beulah bent her head down in prayer and then appeared composed.
“We are all so sorry Beulah. We were very sure that God will heal Rajan” sobbed Sarah. “Well Sarah, it is His will that Rajan reach him today. Let us accept God’s will”
She continued, “I was feeling devastated when you first told me of his death. But when I sought the Lord, he filled me with peace. I know that my Rajan is in His presence. The peace of the Lord, Shalom has calmed me. I cannot understand how, but I feel a peace within me. I thank the Lord for giving me his peace and shalom.” Beulah knelt down to pray. “What peace in the face of calamity? Truly the Lord has touched Beulah” mused Sarah as she too knelt down to pray next to Beulah.

It is a wonderful exploration
of human frailty, love, and
faith in the Lord. Does this
take place in modern day
Israel? Is this story going

hope so! God Bless!
