"Hey Pete, what's up? How's the roof coming along? Getting late, must be done for the day?"
"Well, actually, I--"
"Yeah, I gotta say, you got a lot a guts climbin' up two stories all the time. I don't remember you bein' so brave back in college! Man, I used to kick the stuffing outta you on the field!"
"Meeting the Lord and marrying Casey made me a different man, Terry."
"Me, I'd rather just crack a beer on the couch and watch the game, dude! Are you watchin'? They just stopped 'em at the fifty! So, hey, why don't you just have somebody do the roof for you?"
"Too expensive. Listen, I'm calling--"
"Yeah, but you know, why waste your days off messin' around on the roof? I mean, if you're gonna mess around, do it on the ground with a hot honey, right? Ha ha!"
"Terry, that's not really funny. You know, I've been meaning to talk to you about that."
"About what? Oh come on. Don't start preaching at me, please dude! I was just kidding."
"Really? Would you kid like that if Jan was around to hear you? Or the kids?"
"Oh man, here he goes! Pete, I was just kidding, okay? You should try life in my shoes. God, just because you have the perfect family... uh, I mean--"
"You mean you guys are having problems?"
"Naw, it's nothing. I mean, it's nothing I can't handle; she's just hassling me about bein' around more and that. But she knows I ain't goin' nowhere. Hey, uh, sorry about the
'perfect family' thing. I know you miss Casey. She was a great woman, dude."
"She was... my life. I still dream about her."
"Still think you shoulda sued that idiot who hit you for every penny."
"God called me not to, Terry, I told you that. Why, I don't know. But back to you guys."
"Pete, I told you it's nothing. I just found out I'm going to graveyard shift next week for a couple of months, and she wants to go to that weekly church thing for mothers or whatever, but it's right when I come home in the a.m.! The checkbook ain't looking all that great either. Other than that, life's peachy!"
"Maybe you should meet with Pastor Morse, see if he can help?"
"Man, your pastor's too into all the "filled with the Holy Spirit" and "serve the Lord" stuff. He'd probably try to get me to sign up for Sunday School or one of those work parties or something!"
"It wouldn't hurt you to get out and help, would it? The next work day is in two weeks; we could go together. It'd give us a chance to talk, work together."
"Well, we're talkin' now, right? Besides, I think I'm gonna be busy that day with something."
"Terry, just think about it, okay?"
"Sure, whatever man."
"And if I can help somehow with you and Jan, take the kids for awhile, something, please give me a call, okay?"
"No, no, you got your hands full dude. So, did you need to borrow my tools or somethin'? Our guys just returned a punt to the fifteen! Kinda need to get back to it."
"Terry, I'm actually calling to ask you and Jan for your prayers."
"Oh, well can you call back at the half? Like ten minutes dude?"
"I... need you both to pray for Danny. He... he, uh... he got out of his playpen in the yard and got up the ladder somehow this morning while I was on the roof. He fell, Terry. From about halfway up. I heard him yell and... I've been at the Emergency Room all day. They still don't know if he'll... if he's going to make it. Please, please pray."
