We all have moments in our lives that provide a sense of fulfillment. Riding a bike without training wheels, getting our drivers license and graduation day all provide a momentary sense of completion. But, these moments are fleeting at best. Most wake up the next day with a new goal. Others seem to be dominated by a sense of being lost and wonder, “now what?” In a world that emphasizes accomplishment, one can easily fall into a trap of goal-oriented fulfillment. Fortunately, there is an alternative.
True fulfillment comes when an individual learns to see themselves the way Christ views them. Every Christian is a work in progress. Christ came in order that everyone may have an abundant life (John 10:10). No one starts out with a completely fulfilling life. However, as one grows spiritually and becomes more like Christ, one can look back on their life and see the progress they have made. A true sense of being complete which does not vary with one’s individual performance can be found. This is found in steadily getting to know Christ and the power of his resurrection (Philippians 3). That power which changes one’s character and which is measurable by one’s changed behavior. Accomplishments will come and go and yes, failures as well. However, as long as one maintains a “work-in-progress” attitude, one can receive fulfillment. Essentially, progress is what God uses to provide everyone who seeks Him with a sense of fulfillment.
Won’t it be wonderful to stop one day and say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4.7 NIV). For now, one can be fulfilled with, I am fighting the good fight, I am running the race, I am keeping the faith. I am making progress.
Lord, help each one of us to see the progress they have made and find constant fulfillment by being a work in progress in Your hands.
