During the plague, spotless lambs were sacrificed so the destroyer would pass over the Israelites’ homes and protect their firstborn (Exodus 12:3-6, 13). At the cross, Jesus, the Father’s firstborn, was called the Lamb of God (John 1:29). He was sinless (spotless) and was executed for the sins of the world. Three days later, he overcame death (1 Peter 2:22 and Acts 2:24).
Once the flawless lambs were killed, blood was spread on the door frames with a hyssop branch (Exodus 12:7,22). This was significant because the soldiers offered Jesus vinegar and wine from the plant when He was thirsty on the cross (John 19:28-30).
The Passover took place after the Israelites were set free. God instructed them on what to prepare and eat for the Passover (Exodus 12:17 and Exodus 11:4-6). Jesus’ last supper marked the beginning of the new covenant (Luke 22:20). According to John 19:14, Jesus' crucifixion took place during the Passover. Jesus died on the same date as the Passover lambs were sacrificed.
Another similarity was that no bones were broken in the lambs (Exodus 12:46). Jesus sustained horrible injuries on the cross, yet no bones in His body were broken (John 19:36).
Pharaoh considered himself a great ruler, but he couldn’t overcome the plagues. This proved he was not divine and that he was at God’s mercy. The cross demonstrated God’s power over the rulers of this world and spiritual darkness (Colossians 2:15).
Jesus’ love for His faithful followers was delivered on the cross (Matthew 26:28). The lamb’s blood was a sign of God’s covenant with the Israelites. Jesus’ death founded a new covenant between God, the Gentiles, and the Jews (Ephesians 2:11-22).
The 10th plague and the crucifixion marked the beginning and end of the believer’s plight. Amazingly, the Old Testament scriptures foreshadowed the crucifixion. God is wonderful, giving insight into His Holy Scriptures.
