I can personally tell you that I experienced true grace at the tender age of 8, in a small country church building that has physically been gone for years, but yet lives on in my heart. I know it may sound silly, but even at the tender age of eight, I can remember how afraid I was before I knelt, yielding to the call of salvation. I remember distinctly the unexplainable clean feeling the peace and the joy that flooded my soul. I knew that I didn’t deserve one bit of what God had just bestowed upon me. I got up from that old tear-stained altar, a new creature, and I have never been the same.
However, I found that through the years I have not always been willing to extend that same grace to others. I often assumed that it was their choice that they were in the circumstances that they were currently experiencing, in my own mind, what they probably deserved. I tended to bring judgment without even hearing the case. The jury and the verdict were already in. As I have spiritually matured, I have come to realize it does not matter who you are, never ever say that could never happen to me or my family, we have it together. I attend church regularly, read the Bible, and pray, we are protected. Oh, be careful, because when you think you are above reproach, the enemy already has a foot hold. Like it has been said so many times before you will never know until you walk a mile in another man’s shoes. It is so easy to hold your head high until it actually happens in your small world.
When my perfect little world began to unravel, I realized those things do not just happen to someone else, those who were less committed. It has been a revealing experience for my family to encounter situations that necessitated the extension of grace from others, the grace that in the past I had not always been willing to extend, now I required from others. Now it is grace upon grace for others, because grace knows my name.
