God is transparent with us concerning what he expects from us and his will for us. Since creation, God has been transparent, open, and honest with mankind. God was transparent with Adam and Eve when he warned them not to touch or eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God’s will was obvious and clear.
God is completely transparent about the inheritance of the riches, treasures, and rewards of his kingdom. His word tells us exactly how we can inherit the rich treasures and rewards of God’s heavenly kingdom. The transparent things that can and will separate us from God and keep us from inheriting the spiritual wealth of his kingdom are: unbelief, lack of trust and faith in God, denying Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, not denying ourselves, lukewarmness, and habitual sin and disobedience to the commandments of God.
The riches, treasures, and rewards of God’s kingdom form the imperishable economy of God’s kingdom. What are the riches, treasures, and rewards of God’s kingdom? The riches, treasures, and rewards of God’s kingdom include: the fruit of the Holy Spirit, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the blessings/spiritual rewards obtained from leading a holy life while on earth (these blessings known as the beatitudes can be found in Matthew chapter five). “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such is no law,” (Galatians 5: 22-23).
The Beatitudes in Matthew chapter five name several heavenly blessings and rewards that believers can inherit in the kingdom of God. “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you,” (Matthew 5: 3-12).
The gift of eternal life and eternal joy are also treasures within the kingdom of God that God promises to those who love him, to those who believe in his Son Jesus Christ, and to those who obey his commandments. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved,” (John 3: 16-17). Isaiah chapter 51 and 61 prophesies of the everlasting joy God has promised to the redeemed. “For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them,” (Isaiah 61: 7).
Besides, loving God, loving other people, believing in Christ as Savior, and living a holy life, believers must also have faith, trust, and patience in God in order to inherit the imperishable spiritual wealth of God’s kingdom. The Bible says: “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises,” (Hebrews 6: 12).
The rich young ruler in Mark chapter 10 asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life (Mark 10: 17). He tells Jesus he has kept all the commandments of the Lord since his youth. Jesus commends him, and tells him to sell all that he has and give to the poor and come take up his cross, follow him, and he will have treasures in heaven. The rich younger ruler walks away from Jesus sadly, because he had great wealth. He gives up the imperishable gift of eternal life, for perishable riches, because he did not have faith or trust God wholeheartedly to be the source of everything he needed in life (Mark 10: 17-24). We must put all our trust in God and his faithfulness.
