The end of our life is such an abstract notion to most of us. When we are young there is little if any thought about the possibility of our life ending. We are immortal at this tender age and the thought of passing on is only a vague concept at best. Old people pass away and we are aware of it, but at this tender age the thought of getting old is not something we are able to grasp.
Probably one of the first events that well bring us to the conclusion that we will not live forever is the passing away of a friend or relative. Knowing someone personally that has passed away makes us realize that people really do die. People dieing is still something that happens to other people and not to us. We even joke about it because we still are not in touch with our own mortality. Nothing can kill us this only happens to other people it isn’t going to happen to us.
One day something happens that brings this theory of immortality crashing down around us. We have a close call with death or one of our close friends dies, maybe even a close family member dies an unexpected death. We are suddenly filled with the knowledge that death is not reserved for someone else, it is waiting for us too. This sudden revelation fills us with dread and despair because we just knew that it wasn’t going to happen to us.
Solders in battle know deep down that someone else is going to be killed or wounded and not them. Firemen and policemen all feel the same way. It usually takes a close scrape with death to bring home the fact that we could die at any time without warning.
Once we come to the realization that we can die at any given time and chances are there will be no advance warning it’s time to think about what comes next. What is going to happen after we die? Is there a heaven or hell? If there is, which place are we headed for if we were to die today? We now begin to realize that when the end comes there may not be an opportunity to make amends. The smart person will decide that now is the time to get close to God and try to be ready when the end comes. These people could be represented by the ants that work all the time getting ready for winter. Then there will those that will put off turning to God until the end. These people we will call the grasshoppers who watched the ants work and were caught by surprise when winter came.
God is there now and he will be when the end comes. He will be ready for us but how many of us will be ready to meet him? How many will be found wanting? The big question we all have to ask ourselves is, when the end comes am I ready to meet my maker?
We can’t wait for the end to get here we need to find salvation now before it’s too late. I feel that we are truly living in the end times, and I will be ready when they come. I hope you will be too.
I will say a prayer for all those that need to find God before it’s too late. God is waiting with eternal patients and only he knows when the end will come.
