An alligator, nestled on the shore, heard the splash, slid into the river, and sliced through the water like a rocket through air. Dragonflies feasting on insects near the surface of the water scattered. Flocks of birds took flight, emerging from the treetops. Howler monkeys scurried up into jungle branches hanging over the bank of the river. Their shrieks rang out warnings as they watched the scene unfold.
“Help!” cried Dante.
Talon heard his friend’s plea. Shocked, but quickly realizing that his friend was no longer in the boat, he looked around, frantically searching for Dante. He spotted movement in the water, near the very end of his wake. He spun the boat around, sped up, and headed back toward Dante.
As he drew near Dante, Talon caught sight of the alligator, who was closing in on helpless Dante. He steered the boat straight at the terrible creature. Just before the boat collided with the alligator, it zipped away below the surface of the murky water.
Piranha began circling Dante. “Something keeps bumping me!” he yelled. He kicked wildly, trying to ward off the surrounding predators.
“Hang on, I’m almost there!” shouted Talon. He reduced his speed, pulled close to Dante, then threw a lifesaver beside him. Dante grabbed hold, his hands trembling. Talon pulled him to the side of the boat. Dante struggled to hold on to the boat ladder, his legs and arms nearly failing him from fear and exhaustion as climbed each rung. Talon reached out his arms and helped him up into the safety of the boat.
“Ok, boys, that’s enough adventuring for one day. Time to put away your pool floats and toys, get out of the pool, and have some lunch,” said Mom, ruining yet another grand adventure.
