Never ceases to amaze me how fast I can go from a peaceful morning to a wit’s end kind of day.
You get up, go to the bathroom, take a shower, dry your hair, brush your teeth, fumble for your glasses, and get dressed. You’ve taken time to talk with God while showering. You thank Him for the graciousness of waking up this side of the grave one more day. You thank Him for going before you as your day begins.
Then it happens. You step outside your bedroom door in your bare feet and you feel something “squish” between your toes. You look down at your foot, you don’t have to pick it up, you know what it is. You look up and there is Fido with his ears down with the “Hey, I had to go,” look on his face.
You go back into the bathroom, figure, it’s not so bad, and you’ll just wash it with soap and water. It takes you ten minutes to get the stuff out from the recesses of your toes because your belly is just a bit larger than it used to be. This time, you put on socks and shoes and head back out the door. The cleanup already performed by your loving spouse who swears he took the dogs out this morning.
You gulp down a mug of warm tea, grab your gear for the day and head out the door. The extra foot washing took just enough time to have you sitting for the world’s longest train to cross your path. You figure, okay Lord, what is a good use of this extra time? Let’s carry on a deep, meaningful conversation. Just as you settle down in a place of peace, you are interrupted by “BBBEEEEEEPPPPPPP”. Shaken from your tranquility, you realize, you are stopping the flow of progress for every car behind you.
The rest of the drive is pleasant and peaceful. You have God’s ear. Ahhh, serenity.
Your work day has ups and downs, but it’s a typical day. You feel blessed for having a job to go to, the events of the morning now safely tucked away as a memory.
You head home, walk in the door and discover that Fido has taken a few chomps out of your carpet runner. One of those chunks has left a trail of carpet string around your living room, dining room, and kitchen. At first you want to yell. Then you wonder why you had to have an open layout ranch floor plan. There’s Fido, sitting at your feet, smiling sweetly up at you, tail just a waggling away. “Hi Mom, glad you are home. Wanna play? Can we go outside? I really gotta go, look on his face.”
Off you go to clean up the mess from the days fun. Take your shoes off, get ready to put your boots on, because it’s just too muddy outside for shoes. Fido has moved your boots. Then it happens. “Squish.” You don’t have to look down, you already know. There is Fido with his “you took too long” look on his face.
