This is my tug of war: between my flesh and its natural tendency to sail off into oblivion and to be walking with The Spirit. As Paul wrote in Romans 7:21-25 CSB, there remains a constant pull or desire in my human state to do what I do not want to do.
Although I spend time in the Word daily, listen to and sing worship songs, commune throughout the day with the Lord, attend church, and fellowship with like-minded believers, this ugly side of me will randomly rear its head. When this happens, I immediately notice my faults, apologize to the Lord (and others, if needed), and ask for forgiveness.
Then there are times when I’m not even aware of my ugliness until the Spirit of God reveals to me the mire I’ve been rolling in. Oh, to be clean. This reality check compels me to flail back to the safe shores, where the Lord’s arms are always there to rescue me—to wash me. It’s why I need a Savior. Jesus is my Lifeguard, always coming to my aid to cleanse me anew.
This back and forth, this coming and going to the foot of the cross, is where I exchange my various muck for His grace, mercy, peace, and fruit of the Spirit. It’s where I humbly pick up His robe of righteousness and remember who I am, whose I am, and why I’m here.
There’s no condemnation. It’s pretty humbling to know remnants of my human frailties are still being worked out until I enter the other side of life. Until then, I must nail my shortcomings to the cross at Christ’s feet. I realize the pain of knowing my condition is a pinprick compared to Christ’s barbaric death; however, a different kind of death still occurs in me.
At the cross is where I die to myself. I die to my unhealthy wants and thoughts. I die to man-made or self-made rules. It’s a death of bloody breakthrough. It’s where new life begins—again—because of Christ’s choice to take a brutal beating and death for me.
At the cross is where I remember to live for my Christ—my Redeemer and my Way. I replace my worries and fears with the trust and patience of His timing and His thoughts and ways, which are higher than I could ever imagine (Isaiah 55:9 CSB). I take heed and obey His Word. I get a fresh reset.
At the cross, I become whole again after emptying my water-logged heart for His cup of Salvation. A chrysalis sheds from my heart, revealing a brilliant, metallic gold and silver shining. I rejoice in thanksgiving and gratitude, gladly boasting in the Lord, standing in awe of God’s love for me (2 Corinthians 10:17-18 CSB).
This can only happen when I run to Him, seek Him with all my heart, and find Him (Psalms 105:3-4 CSB). Once I do, I remember again why I’m here: to live for and to worship the Living Christ, my Messiah, Who gave His life for me so I could live mine for Him.
