A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
I have gone through both states of the heart, broken and joyful. A decade back, I found myself at the bottom of the pit of depression. As we all can understand, depression does not happen overnight. It is a process of the prolonged state of a broken heart that finally makes one fall into the pit. Each day with a broken heart gets us a step closer to this pit. I being the only child of my parents, had the responsibility to take care of and provide for my parents. But due to my situation, I could not work for eight years after I finished college. I got married and had two kids. Each day I felt a heavy burden of owing to my parents. The desperation to provide for them but unable to - this was like a knife hanging above my head, all day long, for eight long years. I thought that I was smiling well and managing well. Now when I look back, I wonder what my pretense smile looked like.
Finally, God saw my tears, just as He saw Hannah, and He gave me a job miraculously. A few months into that job, I could not handle the stress of the job and my body started to react. I developed pain in my joints and ended up with a year-long medical leave. I felt devastated because I had to deal with the guilt of being unable to keep the job that God had given me. The next thing I knew, I was at the bottom of the pit of depression. I hated to talk to people. My spirit was always down. I would simply ask, “Hi, How are you?”, not expecting any response back, because neither did I care about how anyone was, nor did I care to share with anyone how I was. Even our loved ones can only stand at the edge of this pit and try to pull us out but in vain. No one’s hand is long enough to reach down to this pit, except the nail-pierced hands of Jesus. And Jesus came to my rescue. He took me out of this pit and put my feet on the solid ground.
From then, my life changed completely. He restored my spirit. Little by little, my heart felt renewed. I experienced the love and the transformative power of Jesus. My life started to change. Once my words used to be, “Leave me alone on a planet and I will be just fine”. But now, I love being with people. Once a friend told me, “Make sure your spirit never goes down. Your cheerful spirit is contagious and lifts up so many people. The devil will therefore attack your spirit and so you don’t give room for that”. My cheerful spirit itself is my testimony. God restored my job and has provided for me till now and has kept me a blessing for many. The biggest goal of my life is to share with everyone the goodness of God who restored my life from the darkness.
Now the joy of the LORD is my strength.
