Proverbs 3:5- “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding (KJV)
In the Bible, there are many examples of faithful witnesses for the Lord Jehovah. Joseph, Abraham, Hagar, Naomi, Ruth, Jesus' disciples, and The Virgin Mary are but a few of the faithful servants of our Lord God. These individuals trusted God and never doubted the validity of his word. One of the most significant, if not the most significant servant of our Lord God, The Virgin Mary trusted God without a doubt. The Virgin Mary didn't question God's promise for her unborn child, Jesus the Christ, who would later become the savior of all humanity. She didn't need to know when this immaculate conception was going to happen? What time it was going to happen? Where it was going to happen? How long it would take? How she would feel when and after it happened? She didn't question the angel with the fine details. She just accepted the virgin birth was going to happen and believed and had faith that it was going to happen. She readily accepted the miracle that would befall her with joy and great gratitude (Luke 1:26-38).
Another devout faithful servant of God, in the Bible, that had a lot of trust in the Lord was Abraham. Abraham who was called Abram before God changed his name to Abraham had a lot of faith in God's word. God promised Abraham that he would be a father of many nations in Genesis chapter 17 verse 4, even though Abraham was almost a hundred and his wife Sarah was almost ninety and had never conceived a child. In verse five, God changed his name from Abram to Abraham. God promised: “And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee,” (Genesis 17:6). God also promised to give Abraham and his descendants all the land of Canaan (Genesis 17:8). God also made the same promise to Sarai Abraham's wife. He promised to make her a mother of nations and changed her name from Sarai to Sarah (Genesis 17: 15-16). God promised Abraham: “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him,” (Genesis 17:19). God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah. “And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him,” (Genesis 21: 1-2).
Everything is going great for Abraham and Sarah when one day Abraham's faith and trust in God to keep his word is tested when God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only son by his wife Sarah as a burnt offering (Genesis 22: 1-2). Abraham did as the Lord commanded him to do. He had faith and trusted that God would keep his promise to him. Instead, of not going, and pleading with God to not sacrifice his son, Abraham didn't ask God why or question what God told him to do. He didn't try to bargain with God to keep Isaac alive. Instead he trusted God, and leaned not on his own understanding. His trust and faith are evident in these two verses: “And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, my son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering, so they went both of them together,” (Genesis 22: 7-8). Abraham passed his love test. He showed God that he was number one in his life. In return, God instructed his angel to stop Abraham from sacrificing Isaac (Genesis 22: 11-12). God provided the sacrifice like Abraham trusted and believed and said that he would. God blessed Abraham as a result of his act of obedience and love. “And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice,” (Genesis 22: 18).
Just like Abraham and Mary, we as Christians must trust God when things seem impossible. We must lean on him and not our own understanding.
