‘Hush!’ said the breeze
On the edge of the thatch
As the moon tried to hide
From the clouds playing ‘catch.’
‘Hush!’ said the breeze
As the light of the moon
Through the half-drawn curtains
Shone into the room.
And the clouds sailing gently
Made patterns of light
As the curtains moved soft
In the breeze-dance of night.
The day had been windy
Clouds hiding the sun
Her work was not easy
At last it was done.
Outside in the field
She’d been raking the hay
Like the farmer had told her
To work from midday.
Now the wind had subsided
With the sun sinking low
And she’d listened and listened
Till home she could go.
As she trudged on the pathway
She heard every sound
Much softer and easy
The air flowed around
Now home, safe at last
At last up the stairs
The breeze whispered sweetly
And helped with her prayers.
And the child slept contented
And dreamed of sweet things
As she heard gentle tunes
From the angels’ wings.
