TITLE: Hazy on the Hill | Previous Challenge Entry

It stands on the hill
At the end of the ridge
Looking down on the vale
And the old stone bridge.
Surrounded by trees
It’s not easy to find
If you’re walking alone
On a path that’s unkind.
Path smothered with brambles
And nettles galore
But it’s worth it yes, worth it,
Worth walking for sure.
From a long way off
You can look to the ridge
Be surprised at how tall
Alfred’s edifice is.
Three-cornered, brick built,
Way long, long ago
A folly it’s called
By those in the know.
To its top you can climb
On a staircase around
In its corner built in
To a long way from ground.
And the view is tremendous
To the north and the west
Of rural old England
But to south is the best.
Down there where I lived
For many of my days
Looking north to the tower
Often faint in the haze.
So hazy so often
I wanted to see
The giant close up
It’s old mystery.
At last I went up there
At last I could see
Close up, no more secret
Man-made, expertly.
In the Bible, a building,
No haze there I see
God’s tower is a Cross,
Christ clear at Calvary.
