What’s wrong with everybody?
Charlie looked around and thought back to when he was a lot younger. Everything was so different then.
People seemed to care more about other people.
Loads more people seemed to work hard.
People seemed to ‘make do’ instead of moaning about having to ‘make ends meet’.
Something’s gone wrong, for sure, Charlie thought.
And what about church? Years ago, lots of folk went to church or chapel every Sunday. Now, as far as Charlie could tell, hardly anybody goes out on Sunday like that.
Perhaps his feelings and thoughts were simply signs of old age.
How lovely, he thought, it would be to discover even one person who sees things as he does. Sometimes, when Charlie tried to pray, he asked God to show him if he’d simply got a twisted view of life here and now.
Sometimes he felt so lonely.
Anyway, a couple of days ago, he cried out, “Lord, please help me! Please say something!”
And He did!
Charlie seemed to hear Him saying, “No, my son, you’re not on your own. I’ve got hundreds of people who love me, hundreds who obey my word, and hundreds who follow me.”
At once, the old man was reminded of the prophet Elijah, who, despite having experienced God’s dramatic dealings with him and through him, felt utterly isolated. “I alone am left,” the prophet cried out to God. And what did God answer him?
“I have reserved for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”
Yes, Charlie thought, God knows exactly what’s going on around me.
I’m not alone, after all!
