After asking God for three signs, he arose early with the people who were with him and encamped across from the camp of the Midianites. The LORD asked the fearful people to return and twenty thousand people left and ten thousand remained. Then the LORD tested the ten thousand at the water and asked Gideon to keep just three hundred people so that the Israelites later do not boast that their own hand saved them.
Even after receiving multiple confirmations from God about his victory, Gideon was still fearful. So, that night the LORD said to him to go into the enemy camp with his servant and that when he hears what is being said in that camp and his hands will be strengthened. Gideon obeyed and took his servant with him into the enemy camp of the Midianites and Amalekites who were spread out as numerous as locusts. And Gideon heard a man telling a dream that he saw. Hearing the dream, his companion interpreted that God has delivered Midian unto Gideon’s hand. Hearing this, Gideon returned to his camp, divided his man into three camps of hundred people, and gave each a trumpet, an empty pitcher, and a torch inside the pitcher. The LORD set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp.
Hezekiah, the King of Judah, feared God and did what was right in His eyes. Sennacherib, king of Assyria came against Hezekiah and encamped against the fortified cities. He sent his commander and his servants to talk discouraging words to the people of Judah and blasphemed against God. Hearing this, King Hezekiah and prophet Isaiah cried out to heaven. God sent word through Isaiah saying that Sennacherib will return to his country and there he will be killed in his own country. After this, the angel of the LORD went out in the night and killed one hundred and eighty-five thousand people in the Assyrian camp. Humiliated by such defeat, Sennacherib returned to his country where he was killed by his sons.
Romans 8:31 NKJV If God is for us, who can be against us?
God is all whom we need in our camp. The above are just a couple of instances when our God came through mightily in defense of His children as their LORD of Hosts.
Psalm 18:13 NKJV The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice, hailstones, and coals of fire. 14. He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe, lightning in abundance, and He vanquished them.
Kind David wrote Psalm 18 as praise for the answer he received for the petitions that he made in Psalm 144. There is no one who can stand against us and prevail when God is on our side. May we turn our hearts towards our God Almighty who is the forgiver of our iniquities and overflowing with undeserved grace towards us and defends us from our foes.
