Alex ran into the house, slamming the screen door behind him, anxious to share with his mom what he learned in school that day.
“Alex,” mom peeked her head around the corner from the pantry. “What is wrong with you? I’m right here. You don’t need to yell.”
“Mom, we learned the most exciting thing in school today. I bet even you don’t know all this stuff,” Alex said excitedly as he grabbed a freshly made chocolate cookie from the cooling rack.
“Just one, or you will ruin your dinner,” admonished mom.
With a mouth full of cookie, Alex began to share his day with mom.
“Today was Science, the best subject of the week.”
Mom smiled as her little boy had a true heart for all-things-science. Especially astronomy. In fact, for his recently celebrated ninth birthday he asked for a Solar System Model Kit. Space was all he talked about.
Stars. Planets. Galaxies. Alex loved it all.
“Mom, we watched a cool video about what makes up the heavens. Bet you don’t know how many planets there are?” Alex asked.
“Nine,” smiled Mom.
“Correct! Did you know these planets are in a Solar System?
“Really,” toyed Mom. “Does this Solar System have a name?”
“The Milky Way. Isn’t that a cool name, Mom? It’s named after my favorite candy bar.”
“What else did you learn about this Milky Way Solar System?” asked mom.
“Well, did you know there are 100 thousand million stars in the Milky Way? Earth is the third planet from the sun. Earth is the perfect place for humans to live because it is not too far from the sun so we would freeze to death, nor is it too close to the sun where we could burn to death. It is absolutely perfect. Mom, do you know how many stars there are in the Universe?”
“No, son, I don’t think I do, but I bet there are millions and millions of them,” stated mom.
“Mom, there are 200 billion trillion stars!” Alex said with enthusiasm. “That’s a 2 followed by 23 zeros.”
“Wow,” exclaimed Mom. “That’s a a lot of stars.”
Mom could see how animated and excited her son was becoming as he talked about a subject which thrilled him beyond words. She loved seeing him so interested in this subject because it gave her an opportunity to talk about God.
“Alex, go get your Bible. I want to show you something.”
“Seriously Mom? We’re talking about the Universe, not the Bible.”
Mom gave him one of those do-what-I-say looks.
“Okay, but I don’t see how the Bible fits into all this Science stuff,” mumbled Alex as he went to his bedroom. He grabbed his Children’s Bible from the shelf, bringing it back to the kitchen table where he and his mom were sitting.
“Alex, open your Bible to Psalm 147:4 and read what it says.”
Alex found the page and read, “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.”
Alex paused for a moment, then looking at his Mom he whispered, “Wow! God made all those stars and he knows each one by name. That’s a lot of names. I didn’t even know there were that many names. I only know Aquarius, Aries, Capricorn, Gemini, Leo. Whew! How does God even remember all the names?”
Alex, we serve a big, and wonderful God. God is big enough to know everything about the universe, including the names of all the stars. But there is one more thing I want you to see. Open your Bible to Isaiah 49:16 and read what God says.”
Alex read, “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…”.
Alex, God has all the names of his children engraved on his hands. God has a mighty big hand.
Alex’ eyes lit up and his little mouth formed a perfect “O”.
“Wow! I had no idea God was so big and that he not only knows everything about me, but he knows everything about the Universe as well.”
“ Psalm 19:1 says, ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech, night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.’ Alex, when we look into the heavens, we can see God all around us.”
“Love you God,” whispered Alex.

Note that when you use 'mom' as a name it should be capitalized. When it is not, like, "his mom," it is not capitalized.
