King Hezekiah had a great start and he did what was right in the sight of the LORD. But in the fourteenth year of his reign, Sennacherib the king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. Hezekiah feared the pagan Assyrian king and pleaded for the pagan king's mercy, forgeting the fact that Our LORD is the might warrior, the LORD of hosts. Hezekiah sent all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD and from the king’s house and the gold from the doors and pillars of the temple of the LORD. But the Assyrian king still came against Judah. He sent his Commander in Chief, Cheif Officer and the Governor who came and taunted the people of Judah and King Hezekiah with their blasphemous words. The blasphemed heavily against the LORD of Israel. They insulted Hezekiah for putting his trust in the God of Israel. These men spoke in the Hebrew language to bring down the spirit of the people of Judah. These men even added lies saying that it was the LORD who told the Assyrian king to go against the land of Judah and destroy it. They compared the LORD of Israel to the gods of the other nations that they conquered beforehand by stating as below.

2 Kings 18:35 NKJV “Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”

When Hezekiah heard of all these words which were spoken by the pagan Assyrians, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD. Then he sent Eliakim who was over his household and other elders and priests covered with sackcloth to Isaiah the prophet. When they came to him, Isaiah said to them not to be afraid for the LORD has heard the blasphemous words of Sennacherib against Him and that He will cause him to return to his own land and there he will fall by the sword.

King Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD, taking the blasphemous letter sent by the King of Asssyria, spread it before the LORD and prayed earnestly. Hezekiah praised God for His Sovereignty. He pleaded to the God of Israel to incline His ear to his prayer.

2 Kings 19:17-19 NKJV Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands - wood and stone. Therefore they destroyed them. Now therefore, O LORD our God, I pray, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD God, You alone”.

LORD sent word through prophet Isaiah that He will make Sennacherib to return to his land in shame and there he will be killed.

2 Kings 19:34 NKJV For I will defend this city, to save it for My own sake, and for My servant David’s sake.

And in that night, the angel of the LORD went out and killed in the Assyrian camp one hundred and eighty-five thousand people. When the people arose early in the morning, there were corpses everywhere. Sennecherib returned to his country with nothing left to stand against the LORD of Israel. Our God’s invisible hand made a visible mighty impact on His enemies.

And just as the LORD said, as Sennacherib went to worship in the temple of his pagan god, his sons struck him down with the sword.

Isaiah 55:11 NKJV So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Zephaniah 3:17 NIV The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.

Hallelujah is all I can say as I finish reading this Bible Study. This was meat for me this morning. Thank you!

There are a couple of typos in the first paragraph, but it was so good to read this story in such a paraphrased format.

It seems Hezekiah created an Ishmael at first when he took things into his own hands...out of fear! How gracious the Lord was (and is!) to still defend him. What a good, good God He is!

Miraculous help from God protecting them when Jerusalem was besieged. Also, when Hezekiah fell seriously ill. God healed him and extended his life for another fifteen years.
