God is Our Battle Axe. He is Our Defense.

Jeremiah 51:20- “Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms.” (KJV)


God is a God of his word. He promises to guide and protect his people. “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing where to I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). “Thus saith the Lord, keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed,” (Isaiah 56:1). “Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it, that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing evil,” (Isaiah 56:2).

There are many stories in the Bible, where God has acted as a defense for his people. A classic story, in the Bible, where God acts as his people's defense, is that of Moses. God called Moses to go into Egypt to free the Israelites from Egyptian rule by Pharaoh. God promised to free his people form Pharaoh's rule. “And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever,” (Exodus 14:13). “The Lord shall fight for you and ye shall hold your peace,”(Exodus 14:14).

God was the people of Israel's defense when they crossed the Red Sea. They didn't have to fight the Egyptians. The fight and the battle belongs to the Lord. “And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided,” (Exodus 14:21). “And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand and on their left,” (Exodus 14:22). “And the Egyptians pursued and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen,” (Exodus 14:23). “And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,” (Exodus 14:24). “And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel: for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians,” (Exodus 14:25). “And the Lord said unto Moses, stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen,” (Exodus 14:26). “And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider: and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider,” (Jeremiah 51:21). “And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea,” (Exodus 14:27). “And the waters returned and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them, there remained not so much as one of them,” (Exodus 14:28). “Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore,” (Exodus 14:30).

God was the Israelites help. God will also be our help and our defense. “Our God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” (Psalms 46: 1). When we are in trouble or are being attacked by the enemy, God will be there to fight for us, if we believe and obey. “Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth,” (Psalms 46:10). “The Lord of host is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” (Psalms 46: 11).
