Watered by the perennial spring and nourished by sunshine, the oasis amidst the hot desert sands,shone like an emerald set in gold. That's how Jericho appeared to the travel - weary children of Israel. On the way to the Promised Land, led by their Lord, God Jehovah, they had crossed flooded rivers and conquered hostile armies, and had come thus far.They were a happy confident people as they pitched their tents and lit the campfires in the plains of Jericho, outside the fortified city. Tomorrow according to God's instructions to their leader, Joshua, they would begin the strategy to capture of the city.

Rising early, the next day, they follow Joshua's orders. They form the leading party of warriors, followed by seven priests bearing seven trumpets, the Jewish Shofars, and behind them are those who carry the Arc followed by the rear guard. The Shofars sound and the army marches around the city. Except for the solemn, majestic and enchanting sound of the Shofars and the crunching of the mens' footsteps, silence reigns. From within the ramparts of the city the baffled and surprised citizens watch with bated breath. They had heard that these people were unpredictable and powerful and worshipped an awesome and mighty God.

Horror hit them hard when they saw the Arc in the procession . They knew that it was the throne of the Hebrew God. Six days they watch with mounting dread. Fear of the unknown strips them of all courage. On the seventh day the procession goes around six times and the seventh time suddenly the Shofars' sound changes to a long drawn mournful note ending with a few sharp high notes and a thundering shout from the Hebrews mingles with the noise as the ramparts crumble and fall down . The victorious children of Israel walkover the debris and conquer the city.

Thus comes to an end one of my favorite Bible passages. Many a time it represents real life situations I have encountered. Facing an immovable challenge I have wondered if just a sound from a Shofar and a shout could remove it. And every time I have realized that it was not my breath within the Shofar or my voice in the shout, but the irresistible force of God's Holy Spirit that helps me walk over my challenges victoriously.
