“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path,” (Psalms 119:105 KJV).
Life is a marvelous journey that all living things are on. We can make our journey good or bad by the choices and decisions we make day to day. A journey is much harder when we try to do it alone. Having God with us on our journey, we will prosper and get to the place both spiritually and physically that he wants us to be. I can’t imagine traveling this journey of life without God or Christ leading my path. We must rely on God to lead us in the way that we should go instead of us trying to lead ourselves. His word is a map and guide for our journey. The word directs our steps and orders our way.
In the Bible, there are many examples of God’s people who God journeyed with and was forever present with them throughout their life. God was with Hagar, when Sarah drove her away because Hagar’s son; Ishmael was mocking (Genesis 21:9-10). “And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder and the child, and sent her away and she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba,” (Genesis21:14). God was with Hagar as she journeyed through the wilderness of Beersheba with her son, Ishmael. “And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs,” (Genesis 21:15). “And she went, and sat down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice and wept,” (Genesis 21:16). “And God heard the voice of the lad and the Angel of God called to Hagar out of Heaven, and said unto her, what aileth thee, Hagar: fear not for God hath heard the voice of the lad. Where is he?” (Genesis 21:17). “Arise lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand: for I will make him a great nation,” (Genesis 21:18). “And God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water, and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink,” (Genesis 21:19). “And God was with the lad and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer,” (Genesis 21:20).
God provided water for Hagar and her son, Ishmael in the wilderness. God heard the cries of Hagar’s son, in the wilderness. God was with Hagar and her son on their life’s journey. God never left Hagar and Ishmael’s sides even though they were cast out by Sarah, Abraham’s wife. Because Ishmael was Abraham’s seed, God promised to be with Ishmael and make him a great nation also even though he would not be heir to the blessing with Isaac. God promised the covenant of Abraham’s seed to be with Isaac, his son, by Sarah his wife. Just like God never left Hagar, even in the face of death, God will never leave us in the face of death and isolation.
Another Biblical example, of God being with his people, on their life’s journey, is that of Joseph and Mary, the earthly parents of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. “And when they were departed, behold the Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child, to destroy him,” (Matthew 2:13). Joseph followed God’s leading on his physical journey and he and Mary and baby Jesus fled to Egypt as the Lord God had directed. God ordered Joseph and Mary’s steps. Next God led Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus to journey to Israel after Herod’s death (Matthew 2:19-23). Joseph was led to Galilee and then to Nazareth with his family, thus fulfilling the prophecy which was spoken by the prophets, that he shall be called a Nazarene (Matthew 2:22-23).
God promises to never leave us nor forsake us on our life’s journey, if we put him first and are willing to be led by his holy spirit (Hebrews 13:5).
