I panicked, “What will people think of us, if we say yes?”
On the one hand, my mind told me that all people deserve to be loved, but on the other hand, my heart felt afraid. Would I be able to maintain a respect for someone who held a different belief than I did? Right now, all I could see about them was their lifestyle.
When I met with the women the next day, I spoke too sharply to them, trying to show that I was in control of this situation.
They humbly thanked me for a providing somewhere to stay, and I felt ashamed of my outburst.
They stayed with us for a few months, always arriving to the sanctuary on Sunday mornings before anyone else, and the irony of that made me chuckle.
They listened with respect to everything that my husband preached.
Later when they asked us to pray for a sick infant in hospital – one of the lady’s nephews – everyone gathered week after week to lift up this need up to God - because a baby is someone that we all can identify with, and barriers were broken.
I found that the thing that I was most afraid of - remaining close to someone who believed differently than I did - strengthened not shattered my faith.
After a few months, they told us they were moving, and as they loaded up our borrowed Church van to transport their few goods - one of the women turned to me and remarked, “You know, under any other circumstance, we’d be holding up signs and cursing you. We know what the Church thinks of our lifestyle.”
“But we’ve never seen a Church like yours before,” added the other, shaking her head in amazement. “You let each of us stay on a really comfortable couch, and that’s more than we ever expected.
“We brought a tent with us when we arrived here - just wanting to find a place to survive – but you gave us more than that. You brought us inside, away from the elements, and you cared for us – you didn’t keep us at arm’s length like everybody else does.”
“We found God in Kenora.”
