“We are here,” She whispered softly touching his shoulder to wake him, daring not to break the silence of the night nor the pleasant feel of freedom that had crept into her heart as the city sank further behind them and finally there was no lights, no cars and no-one to disrupt them.
“Ohhhh… this is so nice.” He said gently kissing her cheek before unbuckling the seat belt to climb out of the car.
They took the blanket from the back, an old woolen blanket that had seen many picnics and many trips in the car, along with the thermos of coffee. Holding hands they walked down to the grassy hill and lay the blanket just on its top.
“Are you ready?” He asked clearly excited, as he placed a cushion on the blanket for her to lie on.
“It’s such a perfect night for this.” She added as they lay side by side, firstly looking at each other then slowly looking up, their eyes drawn to the sky. Magnificent to behold it lay before them, the Milky Way and the constellations that they knew were clearly visible. They sighed in unison at the display, better than any fireworks, and just drank it in.
“He couldn’t have known.” Adam said with quiet awe.
“That’s true.” Sara’s reply was thoughtful, pensive. As the stars glittered above them, and shot through the sky like arrows.
“Do you think he tried to count them?”
“I would have. Every single night, the impossible…”
“But even if he had counted all the stars in his own sky he would have never guessed there were more.”
“True, and then there are the ones we can’t see.”
“That we don’t even know exist.”
“Abraham was an awesome man.” Adam replied “I am sure even with his view of the sky that he did have, he had only an inkling of what God was doing.”
“I wonder how many stars there are in space?” Sara asked him quietly as he sat to get a cup of coffee from the thermos.
“A lot.”
“And God said his descendants would number the stars,” Sara added in awe.
“God is an awesome God, he knew how many stars there were and are and will be, and he knew that Abraham wouldn’t be able to count them all.”
“What a gift to be one of those itty bitty stars that Abraham could not see.” Sara replied as Adam began to pack things up, they had already been there an hour and it was time to head home.
The trip home was as peaceful and light as sitting under the stars together had been.
Sara smiled to herself knowing they both felt renewed and refreshed. It was good to get out and get some space now and then, to find some perspective of where you fit in to the grand scheme.
