The passage was in Chapter 16 in the Book of Genisis, which was the story of an Egyptian slave girl, named Hagar. She served in the household of a rich Jewish shepherd named Abram and his wife Sarai. They were both elderly and had no children. However God had promised Abram that he and Sarai would have a son. Sarai was past the age of child- bearing and decided that thenonly way Abram could have a child would be through another woman. She chose Hagar to be the surrogate mother.
The plan worked and Hagar conceived Abram's child. When Hagar realized that she was the mother of her master's child, she considered herself above the status of a slave and even above her mistress who could not have a child. Conceit and pride made her despise Sarai. It is also possible that Abram treated Hagar, the mother of his child, with some affection and favor. Jealous and angry, Sarai complained to Abram. Being a domestic problem Abram told Sarai to do what she thought was best.
Sarai, being smart enough to know that she couldn't get rid of Hagar until the child was born, started to ill treat and make her life miserable. Hagar had no escape. As a Egyptian in a foreign country, she faced the death penalty of every run- away slave . Preferring death she ran away into the wilderness.
The angel of the Lord found Hagar, ' near the spring in the desert .....beside the road to Shur. And he said, " Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going". (Genesis 16:7). It is interesting that the Angel called Hagar the servant of Sarai indicating that her status had not changed. When Hagar said she was running away from her mistress, he said, " Go back to your mistress and submit to
her ". The angel added," I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count." He also said to her, " You are now with child and you will have a son, you shall name him Ishmael l, for the Lord has heard your misery......".
(Genesis 16: 9-11). And she gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her "You are the God who sees me"
Hagar returned to to Sarai and God kept His promise. This is Hagar's story. Mine is similar to it. I was trying to help,a dear friend out of her desperate need and found myself in a situation I could not handle. I did not know how to get out my predicament. I tried to escape but could find no way except to run to God and falling on my knees surrender my problem to Him and beg for help. God met me at my point of despair and told me to be still and watch Him handle the situation. In His competent hands, in own way, in His own time my problem was solved. I understood Hagar's words ," You are the God who sees me". I know that I can never escape my Lord God's watchful and caring eyes.
