The trouble began when the bridesmaids showed up late with their dresses not finished. They were so late that the ceremony was supposed to start in less than an hour. Mary, one of the seamstresses, had been at the church for three hours waiting for the bridesmaids to show up so she could start getting them ready for the ceremony.
All of the seamstresses started sewing with all of their might, trying to make up for lost time. They hoped the guests would not have to wait too long for the wedding to begin. As it turned out, the wedding began exactly thirty-five minutes later than it was supposed to. The reason all the bridesmaids were late was not generally known at the time.
I suppose most of the guests just thought the bride’s attendants were inconsiderate and not worthy to be in the wedding party at all. The attendants knew they were supposed to come to the church at 1:30 p.m. It was just not right to expect Mary and the others to be there at 1:30 and then for the bridesmaids to not show until 3:45.
The second problem the couple had was that the bride’s mother had a fever of one hundred two on the morning of the wedding. No one told the bride because her mother Marjorie did not want to worry her daughter on the biggest day of her daughter’s life. It was easy to conceal that Marjorie had the flu since the bride had not seen her mother all day until she was standing at the front of the church.
The reason all of the bridesmaids were late was because they helped Marjorie to get out of her house and to the church. Her husband could not help since he had recently had a stroke and was still very weak. So the bridesmaids ended up helping both Marjorie and the bride’s father to get to the church.
When the bride found out what her attendants had done for her mother and father, she was so moved she broke down and cried. The bride realized then that she should have had more of a role in both her father’s and her mother’s lives. If she had, she would have known she needed to get a nurse in the house to help her parents, especially her father, during this bad time.
I think many of the guests learned a few things that day. One of them was to not jump to conclusions about people before you know all of the facts. A second learning experience was to realize that sometimes you have to do things even when they make you look awful. But it’s important to remember the Lord knows the truth, even when other people don’t.
