I will always remember the first time I fully understood what the Lord Jesus did for me on the cross. I had been taught about the things of God by my mother at home and so I did not have the benefit when I was growing up of hearing sermons or going to Sunday school.

When I was fourteen, my father decided I should start going to church. He chose a small church right around the corner from where we lived at the time. About a year later we learned that this church was not teaching the truth, so we both quit attending there. My parents and I moved away from that neighborhood the following year.

That August, I met several girls who came to our door to tell us about their church. My father said I should try going there since the girls invited me and I would probably see them at school that fall. So I figured I would go and see what went on at that church.

The church service was wonderful. The pastor had a fantastic way of describing what Jesus had done. He told us how God could not condone sin and so He had to send Jesus to our wicked earth so He could die in our place and we could go to Heaven. The pastor said that if Jesus had not died for us, we would have had to go to Hell ourselves. We would never be able to get out of Hell because we would have had to spend all of eternity there to pay for our sins.

This was the first time I understood what Jesus had done for me. It all made perfect sense that day. God is so devoted to us and our well being, both now and for all eternity, that He sent His Son to us as a baby. Jesus was fully God and fully man.

It is amazing that God is so interested in us. He could have just left us to our own desires and passions and let us do what we wanted. He could have, but He did not want us to be lost forever. He gave us a way to come back to Him. He loves us and His devotion to us is limitless. With all this in view, should we not give Him our full devotion?
