Nothing seemed to be working for me. I reached a point and felt as though my life had stagnated. Life seemed to be a vain routine. There was an unexplainable deep void that was entrenched within me. ‘What is wrong with me?’ I wondered to myself. The sparkle of life just disappeared and I was easily tired and irritable. My prayer life went dry and really down and I derived no joy from it. I felt like a nobody; ‘No one cares and what difference does it make anyway?’
I felt that I could not take it anymore and decided to pray seriously about it. I was not about to let go till God had addressed my issue. My life depended on this prayer. After some time in praying, God spoke to me and said ‘why have you locked me out of your life?’
The following conversation ensued:
Me: What do you mean? I pray, give, go to church. I do not understand.
God: It is true. The thing is, you do all that for me but you do not give me a chance to reciprocate. You do them out of habit and not love and revelation.
Me: You lost me. I have no clue on what you are saying.
God: Prayer and Christianity are not just about you talking to me. They are more importantly, me talking and relating with you. I long to talk to you, be with you but you hardly give me a chance. My desire is to have a relationship with you that is based on love, honesty and trust.
Me: Ok. I think I get you now. You mean I stop doing and talking too much, pause, slow down and listen to you?
God: Precisely. When you listen to me, I give you instruction and tell you what is in my heart.
That was it! I had been too busy serving God that I didn’t have time for him and literally shut him out of my life.
I realized I needed to let God be a solid foundation in my life. Constantly relating and listening to him as he listened to me.
Psalm 32: 8 (The Gideon’s International)
‘I will instruct and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye’
How was this going to happen if I didn’t give God the space that he so longed to have in my life? While I was busy doing good things, it didn’t necessarily mean that they were the right things to be done. I was pushing away the person who loved me most.
We need to be close to God such that even the blessings that he gives us do not crowd us and make us lose him.
The most detrimental thing that can happen to any believer is to lose God. …especially when we don’t realize it. This happens when we deny him space in our lives.
What is occupying God’s space in your life? Is it your schooling, family, spouse, goals and ambitions, work, friends or even church?
God bless.
