This loss feels as if I have been hit, wounded once again. We
never know what's coming just around the bend. That pothole
in life is so unexpected, so we must stand on the Promises of
God at all times.
It seems like every corner that I turn, something reminds me
of my friend Beau. We prayed together; well, whenever I felt the need to pray, he was always quiet and respectful when we hung out. What truly blessed me was that he listened and even enjoyed my Praise and Worship music. Beau was not a Believer in God, but he respected my beliefs.
Our friendship was one of great value to me; I believe that he appreciated me for making myself available to him at any time, rain or shine; in other words, I was intentional about being a 3 a.m. friend.
I continue to Praise the Lord; I have been a very happily married man for nearly 52 years. My bride figured out that I needed something in my life at this juncture. A close pal is what I was in the market for, in her opinion. She also knew just how much I value loyalty; she introduced Beau and me to each other. At first, I couldn't comprehend why my wife paired us together. It turns out that I have never had a friend of this caliber as Beau. One thing that I liked about Beau was that he was not a big talker. He enjoyed the great outdoors, which I had only appreciated while watching western and adventure movies.
He reminded me of my youth while pointing out objects on the ground, alive or otherwise. I found myself genuinely seeing the trees and wildlife as we walked. For the first time in my life, I genuinely appreciated God's outdoor creation around me. You see, my doctors prescribed exercise for me by way of getting outdoors and walking our property with my dog Beau.

Thank you for your well-written story.
I would change the dog's name to something way more human. I knew you were writing about a dog on the name alone.
Your memories of Beau are precious. You could develop them a bit further. Describe a late night chat with Beau or a long, satisfying walk.
The end is just a bit abrupt. The punch line is ... my dog, Beau and it works. I'd leave off about the doctor's advice and build a more surprising ending with that last punch line.
Loved this! Maybe because I have an elderly dog, Otis, and the thought of losing him already pains me!
