" It's all your fault, " Lerato cried.
" Who was it that pulled her into the water. I'm the one that got her out," Brian replied.
"I blame you," Lerato continued her voice breaking.
There was silence and then an indistinct chatter close to her feet. Something about the heat. She felt Fiona rubbing her palms as she said something vague that kept the others from talking about her. Why couldn't she get up and tell them that she was okay?
It was a sunny afternoon. Mollie and her friends had gone to the beach after class. It was her first visit, and she was determined to make the most of it. They made sandcastles, watched the waves, ate snacks and played in the sand. They shot numerous videos and photos.
Whilst the others had been keen to play in the ocean, Mollie and Lerato kept well away from it. As the day wore on, Brian suddenly acting naughty decided to pull Lerato into the ocean. After all, what was the point in just seeing it when you could have the feel of the water? Seeing that she was wet Lerato targeted Mollie. There was no way that the two of them would go back to their campus residence together when she was drenched wet. Mollie tried to flee but, was caught and dragged into the ocean. The water was icy cold, yet something was amiss. She felt exposed and a little ashamed. She looked up and saw Peter standing on the sand at a distance. He had a worried look on his face. She felt limp and blacked out. Strong arms grabbed her as she fell, lifting her above the water.
"She's in shock."
"It's the heat. Mollie has been in the heat for a long time."
She had been lying on the ground for a while. Nothing was encouraging about hearing her friends blaming each other. She had no way of telling them not to worry. No matter how she tried, she felt locked in that position without any hope of getting up. Mollie was tired, unable to talk or do anything. She decided to sleep. She felt herself drift away slowly as if turning away from where she lay on the sand.
Then Peter's voice sounded near her ear. Yes. That was Peter. He was saying something. It sounded like a prayer. Maybe she could postpone her going to sleep until Peter had finished praying. As Peter prayed, she felt herself liven. She was no longer drifting away. His voice was making sense, and his words clear.
"Mollie, can you hear me?" Peter asked.
"This is Peter. If you can hear me make a sound."
With her body still locked up around her and unable to move her lips but strengthened within herself from the prayer, Mollie made an indistinct sound.
"She's back," Peter said.
"Do you know who is talking to you?"
Another indistinct sound.
"She's going to be just fine."
The End.
