Once, a young and very eager missionary student in his final month of training named "Don't laugh, Serenity Oliver Scott." Yes, I know, and please don't say it; " HELP! " his initials turned out to be SOS, which inspired many comments and, at times, lengthy dialog. His initials are the recognized signal of distress in radio code for "SAVE," Serenity is quick to respond that his name comes from both of his beloved grandfathers. Most folks over a certain age are familiar with the maritime reference, " Need of Rescue."
Serenity loved the Lord, which made it easy for him to engraft the Word of God into his heart. Almost every time that someone saw him, he was carrying his Holy Bible. He also could be seen talking to his creator throughout the day, asking for another opportunity to share the Good News with someone else before it was too late for them.
Graduation was just weeks away, and he had the privilege to choose his very first assignment, stateside or in some small corner of the world. For years Serenity always knew that he would end up in some little remote village, possibly in a jungle setting. But, now, he felt like his work for God was to take place right here in the good old U.S. of A. he felt a strong tugging on his heart for him to serve somewhere in or around the Big Apple. It turns out that he had an elderly aunt living in a town northeast of the city, New York. He remembers the church that his family attended when he was a boy.
On his first weekend in town, he visited the church, and would you believe that every member was a senior over the age of seventy? He spoke to the Elder, who was filling in for their frail Pastor, who was sick most of the time. He watched as the few who attended streamed out, and much to their detriment, they were not even aware that they were all dying off. He didn't see any young couples nor any young children. It was apparent that those church members he spoke with loved the Lord, and he recognized many of their faces from before.
As time went by, Serenity knew what he was supposed to do at this small community church. His mission field was right here in his home town. Deep down in his soul, he knew that it was time for a revival to spring up in the community's hearts and minds; after many conversations and prayer with the churches Head Pastor, finally with open arms, he agreed that it's time for a revival.
Question for you, how does one inspire the beginning of a revival in a dead community? The answer is one person at a time. I challenge you to dig, to search the Word of God for a verse that will genuinely inspire a revival in your heart.
This verse inspires me to keep going: (10) " Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
(11) Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me " (Psalm 51:10-11). If more of us had the compassion of one Serenity Oliver Scott and continued to talk with our heavenly Father throughout our busy days, we might weep for the hundreds of thousands of lost souls around the globe ushered into eternity unsaved.
Would you say that this is the time for rejuvenation? It just might be the time that we can gather an audience of enthralled listeners to the love of God?
