Riiiinnnnggg. My alarm woke me to a glorious Sunday morning. As I stretched and yawned, telling myself to get up, I thought about my Sunday School class. Our teacher emailed on Monday that we would be studying Psalm 19 together. I read the Psalm each morning for my devotions in preparation for class today. I could hardly wait to hear Mrs. Jonas expound on these words David wrote.

I finally talked myself into getting up and dressed. I entered the kitchen to the smell of coffee as it finished brewing. I loved my Keurig. One touch of the button the night before gave me fresh-made coffee the next morning. Pouring my coffee into my travel mug, I set off for church. It was a ten minute drive; ten minutes to have a brief conversation with my Father.

As I entered the class, seven other women were already there. Promptly at 9:00 Mrs. Jonas began our study. “Class” she said. “Open your Bibles to Psalm 19 and let’s read the first six verses. Nancy would you please read.”

I began,

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
night after night they make him known.
They speak without a sound or word;
their voice is never heard.
Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
and their words to all the world.

God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.
It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding.
It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens
and follows its course to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.

“This Psalm is filled with the greatness of God as we marvel at his creation,” Mrs. Jonas started. “Let’s consider the sun for a moment. Do you realize that the distance of the sun from earth is 93 million miles. Do you have any idea what that might look like?”

Eight women shook their heads no.

“Let me put it this way. If an airline jet, flying 550 mph, left earth today it would take nineteen years to reach the sun.

“Wow!” Julie said.

Verse six tells us that the sun always rises in the East and sets in the West. It never changes course. Never rises one day in the North and the next day from the South. God is a God of order and everything He does is done orderly, including the activity of the sun.

Let’s consider the stars,” Mrs. Jonas continued. “The stars are part of God’s heavenly craftsmanship. There are 93 million trillion stars in the universe. That is equal to approximately the number of grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth. Now hear this. God knows every star by name.” (Psalm 147:4)

“That’s amazing,” I said.

“Do you know what is even more amazing?” asked Mrs. Jonas.

“The distance from earth to the sun cannot be imagined or even visualized. When we think of all those miles, we wonder how we could ever reach God. But God, in his mercy, arranged things so the distance to receiving a personal relationship with Jesus is only 15 inches. That is the distance from your head to your heart.

Throughout the six days of creation God spoke and everything was put in place. But when God made man, he breathed his breath of life into him (Genesis 2:7). God is so powerful that He only had to speak and the world was created. His breath gave life to man. He knows the stars by name. Yet as vast as his universe is, as big and awesome as God is, He is only 15 inches away from becoming your Savior. Your eternal destiny depends on fifteen inches.

Your head knowledge will not get you a home in heaven. Romans 10:9-13 says this, ‘If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved…Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”

“Ladies, I want to challenge you to go home and watch the youtube video Louie Giglio on the Star Maker. He puts things into perspective on how small we are when we consider the universe and who God is. When you come back next week, we will discuss what you have heard.”

“Class dismissed.”
