I would like to believe that I am a little too old for Superman. Or maybe the reality is that Christopher Reeves is dead and I cannot bring myself to accept anyone else in the same role. I guess that is how I feel about the Incredible Hulk. Bill Bixby is dead. I had no idea that he had even died. I just knew that I could not relate to the new Hulk movies. I guess, superheroes belong to the comics. However, a hero would look like us. He or she would most definitely not be a mutant or an alien.

He could be that tall guy with the tan and long dark wavy hair that can be fastened into a ponytail. His rugged looks and square set jaw should make the ladies swoon, except of course he is not of their class. He can get into a fight, beat the bad guys into a pulp and be the only man left standing. He would be the most honest and upstanding man even if he comes from the ghetto. Being ordinary and less cultured in the manner of women’s affairs, he will most definitely make a rich man’s daughter angry. They will bump into each other a few times and learn to hate each other. Then in a time of peril, she will have no other rescuer but him. They will fall in love and marry after many trials. Now that could be a plot for a telenovela. That is the type of hero I got accustomed to watching after Superman. I was so fond of one such character that I had to look him up on Google.

Find him I did, but to my great disappointment he was nothing like his character in real life. The hero’s lifestyle was not admirable. I even thought the one who played the villain was more admirable. Disenchanted, I could not bring myself to watch another telenovela again. How could I have put such a man on a pedestal? What was worse is that he was not the only one. So many were divorced, married more than once, and the moral lives lived on screen was probably just that.

The Bible has something to say about my hero-worshipping. I was ashamed to admit that I knew they were idols. The sad part was it was not just TV characters that I had to be careful not to put upon pedestals. I also had to learn the hard way with pastors and other figures of authority. When we focus on men, we will be disappointed. There will always be something missing. One thing is sure; Jesus is the same today, yesterday and forever.
