I can’t remember when I first heard the word “hero.” However, when I travel in my mind back to a more simpler time, I find myself acquainting it to a man flying through the air and hearing, “able to leap tall buildings with a single bound, bend steel with his bare hands.”
Yes, Superman, the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers and other childhood favorites were how I often spent my Saturday mornings. Years later, once again I witnessed similar admiration, when my son watched Speed Racer, Power Rangers, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and others. I would sometimes think back on my childhood memories and smile as I watched him admire those make-believe heros.
Now, I am more selective with that particular badge of honor. I suppose, the label of “hero” sometimes floats around in my mind waiting to find a landing spot, but when I allow the illusive label to land on a person, it is one who is willing to give up everything, even life, for the well-being of another. We see them in the news every day. Heros are found in the medical profession, law enforcement, armed services, first responders etc. They put their lives on the line for others. I am extremely thankful for their courage and sacrifice.
Although I revere, admire, and respect these selfless heros, the ones I wish to honor are often overlooked, and even thought by some, to be of lesser importance to society. They may be uneducated, or highly educated, but their job doesn’t require a degree. These brave ones will give up everything for the life of another. This responsibility does not carry a retirement plan, because it lasts a lifetime.
So, you see when I think of the word “hero” I think of the young girl or woman whom God has chosen to bring a new life into the world. She may be scared, because her future has suddenly taken a turn. She may find herself in a seemingly impossible situation with no way out. She may have no support system, and need help from outsiders. She may be very young with plans for her life, or older thinking her child bearing days are over, when she is learns she is pregnant.
Despite numerous obstacles, she chooses the life of her unborn baby over everything and everyone else. If she chooses to raise her child, or if she chooses adoption, her sacrifice is not just nine months, or 18 years, but for her entire life.
Why would a young girl or woman in a crises pregnancy make such a choice? Because she knows everyone deserves a chance. Because she knows this is the right thing to do. Because she is brave!
To the scared mother who chooses life over the other option, you are my hero!
