TITLE: The Dictionary Lesson | Previous Challenge Entry

With hands in dishwater, mom turned, looked at her son and said, “My goodness DJ, that’s a strange question to ask. Just why are you asking?”
“Well, I was over at Erik’s house and he told me that his whole family gets to go to Washington, DC - to the White House - to see our President. Erik said he is the most famous person in the whole world.”
“They are going to the White House?” questioned Mom. “Why are they going to Washington?”
“Erik said his grandpa is getting some kind of medal for being in the Army and the whole family is invited for the ceremony. Erik said his grandpa is famous for something he did, and he is being honored. Isn’t that cool Mom?”
“Yes, it's very cool son. You asked me if we knew anyone who was famous. I think we should first define what famous means. DJ, would you go to the library and bring me the dictionary.”
DJ hopped off his chair and walked into the library. After searching for a minute, he spotted the red Webster’s Dictionary on the second shelf, grabbed it, and brought it to his mother.
“DJ, look up the word famous and let’s see what it says,” Mom instructed.
DJ found the page beginning with F then scrolled down until he came across the word famous.
“Okay DJ, now read the definition.”
DJ began reading, “Someone well known or widely known. Well, the President is certainly well known. It also defines famous as first rate or excellent. What does that mean Mom?”
Mom dried her hands on a nearby yellow towel then came and sat at the table with DJ. “Let’s take this one-by-one.”
“First, you asked if we knew anyone who is famous. Your Uncle Doug could be classified as famous. Remember, he played baseball for the Toronto Blue Jays for seven years. We have all his baseball memorabilia in that red photo album. You loved to hear all the stories he would tell about his years of playing, and pitching. I think he might be considered famous, even if it was for a little while. At least he is famous to us.”
“I forgot about Uncle Doug playing baseball. So, I have a famous Uncle,” smiled DJ.
“Wait till I tell Erik.”
“Don’t forget grandpa. He was a pastor in New York City, the biggest City in the United States. His messages brought many people to Christ. Many well-know people ate dinner at his table, including the President of the denomination. I think grandpa could be considered famous in the work God called him to do.”
“Hmmmm,” contemplated DJ. “I always thought of grandpa as just grandpa, not as a preacher working for Jesus. Thats pretty awesome. Does grandma know he is famous?” asked DJ.
Chuckling she said, “I guess you’ll have to ask grandma, but I don’t think grandpa thinks of himself in that way. I’m pretty sure he knows how the Good News has changed the lives of people, and wants no credit for what only God could do.”
“Now, DJ, let’s look at the second definition” replied Mom. “First rate or excellent.
Remember DJ when you had your last baseball game. Your team was up by one run. It was the bottom of the ninth, two outs, bases loaded, and you were brought in to pitch to the last batter.”
“Boy! Do I ever remember that game, I was scared half-to-death!”
“To be honest DJ, I was scared for you. I knew the championship was on the line with that last pitch. I prayed that you would honor God with whatever the outcome was. But, you struck the last batter out. Your team won that championship. What a game! All the kids patted you on the back, gave you high-fives, hugged you. I would say that you, DJ, pitched a famous game.”
“Boy, oh boy! Wait till I tell Erik I did something famous. He won’t believe me.”
One excited nine-year ran out the backdoor in search of his best friend so he could share with him what he learned from the dictionary about the word famous.
“Erik! Guess what? I’m famous!”
