Whenever it was time to fast, my nose paid attention to the aroma of chicken and chips across the road. It would fill the air and envelope me as I walked past the Speers take away. My attention to detail was spot on when I walked past the delicatessen in the supermarket. Whenever I was hungry during the time of fasting, I had photographic memory of food. When the fast would end two weeks later, I knew what the recipe entailed and exactly how to garnish it. When it was time to fast there was a renewed interest in filling my recipe scrap book with new recipes. The scrap book would lie on the shelf for months unnoticed until the annual fast was announced.
Why was the time meant for fasting and prayer the one time I was interested in collecting recipes. I felt like a hypocrite. I was supposed to be seeking God’s face. I was supposed to be hungry for his word. I was supposed to be soaking in his presence. It would take days of prayer before my interest to browse recipes would take the back seat.
What do you hunger for during your time of fasting? Does God’s presence become the last thing that you seek? Does fasting become an exercise of starvation whilst you seek your own interests?
Matthew 26: 41 says “Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
